Goethe B2 exam pattern: four modules
Goethe B2 has four modules. Each module has 100 points and you pass a module with 60. You can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen alone or together.
| Module | What you do | Time and points |
|---|---|---|
| Reading (Lesen) | 5 parts, 30 questions | 65 minutes, 100 points |
| Listening (Hören) | 4 parts, 30 questions. You hear parts 2 and 4 twice and parts 1 and 3 once | 40 minutes, 100 points |
| Writing (Schreiben) | Part 1: a forum post of 150 words (60 points, plan 50 minutes). Part 2: a formal message of 100 words (40 points, plan 25 minutes) | 75 minutes, 100 points |
| Speaking (Sprechen) | 2 parts: a presentation (Vortrag) with questions, then a discussion with your partner | 15 minutes in pairs (10 minutes when alone), after 15 minutes of preparation, 100 points |
Goethe B2 mock test online
Each set above is one full exam module. Start it online and you get the same tasks and the same time limit as in the exam. Reading and listening are scored against the answer key when you hand in. Writing and speaking are marked on the exam criteria, and you see your result out of 100 for each module.
If you prefer paper, open the PDF of the same set, print it and set a timer. The answer key for reading and listening and the assessment notes for writing and speaking are on the paper page of each set.
In Lesen and Hören you need 18 of 30 correct answers for 60 points, the pass mark of a module. Use that number when you check your own paper against the key.
Worked example: Lesen Teil 3, question 21
In Lesen Teil 3 you read a long newspaper article and answer six multiple choice questions, 16 to 21, in the order of the text. Set 01 has an article about couples who run a company together.
The question: "21. Für Mara ist die gemeinsame Firma heute …" (For Mara, the shared company is today …). The options are "a) vor allem eine Gelegenheit, möglichst viel Zeit miteinander zu verbringen.", "b) ein gemeinsames Projekt, das klare Grenzen zum Privatleben braucht." and "c) nur eine Übergangslösung bis zur Eröffnung weiterer Filialen."
The right answer: b
Option a is the tempting one. The text talks about a couple, a shared project and pride, so "time together" feels right. But the next sentences turn it around: "Dennoch soll der Betrieb nicht jeden privaten Moment bestimmen" (Still, the business should not rule every private moment). Mara protects time away from the company, with no business talk at dinner and one weekend day without it. The answer key of set 01 gives b. Option c is not in the text at all.
The trap in this example: the option picks up the mood of the paragraph but misses the word that limits it. Here the word is "Dennoch". Read to the end of the paragraph before you choose, and look for words such as dennoch, jedoch, aber and nicht jeden.
How to work through Lesen Teil 3
- Read the whole article once for the main line, then read question 16 and find its paragraph. The questions follow the order of the text.
- Cross out options that name something the text never mentions, such as the further shops in option c of question 21.
- For the two options that remain, find the exact sentence in the text. Check the contrast words (dennoch, jedoch, aber), because they decide which option is right.
- Choose the option that matches the text in other words, not the one that repeats the same words.
Plan your four modules
- Take the modules in the order Goethe recommends, Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, with a break of at least 15 minutes between modules.
- In Schreiben, split the 75 minutes: 50 minutes for the forum post of 150 words (60 points) and 25 minutes for the formal message of 100 words (40 points).
- For Sprechen, use the 15 minutes of preparation to write notes for your Vortrag. Then talk in pairs for 15 minutes, or 10 minutes when you are alone.
- Start with one reading and one listening set online. Your score per module shows which module needs the most work.
- Work through a new set every few days and compare your score with the pass mark of 60 of 100 points in each module.
Take one module or all four
B2 is modular. You can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen alone or together, and each module you pass gets its own certificate. The modules count alone, so a weak module does not cancel a strong one.
You take the exam at a Goethe-Institut test centre. Book a date at a centre in your city, then use the papers above to prepare the module or modules you plan to take.
Frequently asked questions

- Can I take only one Goethe B2 module?
- Yes. B2 is modular: you can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen alone or together, and each passed module gets a certificate.
