Goethe-Zertifikat B2, Sprechen

Goethe B2 speaking practice: Vortrag and Diskussion

Goethe B2 Sprechen is a paired exam in two parts: a short talk (Vortrag) on a topic you choose, then a discussion with your partner. Below is a real task card from a Faust practice paper, explained in English. You can start that speaking paper free online, without an account, and practise it alone.

No signup needed. The practice exam starts right in the browser.

Before the exam you get 15 minutes to prepare on your own, and you may make notes. The exam itself is set at 15 minutes for a pair, with two examiners. In Teil 1 each candidate gives a short talk and then answers questions on it. In Teil 2 the two of you discuss one question and end with a clear position.

The cards below are from Faust Übungssatz 01 for Goethe B2 Sprechen. On exam day you get other topics, so use this paper to learn the structure that earns the points, not to memorise a topic.

The preparation time

So you prepare alone, notes are fine, dictionaries and phones are not, and in the room you speak freely instead of reading.

Both tasks are on the sheet, so the 15 minutes are for the talk and the discussion. Pick your talk topic quickly, write keywords for each of its three points, then note two arguments for and against the discussion question. Keywords help you speak freely; full sentences tempt you to read.

Teil 1: Vortrag halten (giving a talk)

The instruction: „Sie halten in einem Seminar einen kurzen Vortrag. Wählen Sie eines der beiden Themen. Gliedern Sie Ihren Vortrag in Einleitung, Hauptteil und Schluss.“ You give a short talk in a seminar, choose one of two topics, and build it as introduction, main part and conclusion. The card sets the talk at 4 minutes, and then you answer questions.

Thema 1 on this paper: „Sie nehmen an einem Seminar zum Zusammenleben in der Stadt teil und halten einen kurzen Vortrag zum Thema: Nachbarschaftliche Unterstützung organisieren.“ The topic is organising help between neighbours. The other choice, Thema 2, is „Freiwilliges Engagement im Alltag“ (volunteering in everyday life), with the same three steps.

The three points of Thema 1

Your talk must cover all three. Watch the verbs: they tell you what to do.

  • „Beschreiben Sie mehrere Möglichkeiten, wie Menschen in einem Wohnviertel einander unterstützen können.“ Describe several ways people in a neighbourhood can help each other. Mehrere means more than one: give two or three.
  • „Beschreiben Sie eine dieser Möglichkeiten genauer.“ Take one of them and describe it in detail: who does what, how it is organised, a concrete example.
  • „Nennen Sie Vor- und Nachteile organisierter Nachbarschaftshilfe und bewerten Sie diese.“ Name advantages and disadvantages, and then judge them. This point has two verbs. Many candidates list pros and cons and stop; bewerten means you also say which side weighs more for you, and why.

From card to talk: lines from the Faust model answer

The teacher sheet of this paper has a Faust model answer for Thema 1. It shows one possible answer and carries no score. These lines show how each step sounds.

StepWhat you doGerman you can say
EinleitungName the topic and the plan of your talk„In meinem Vortrag geht es darum, wie man nachbarschaftliche Unterstützung in einem Wohnviertel organisieren kann.

After the talk: Fragen und Antworten

When you finish, your partner and one examiner ask you questions, and you answer them. After your partner's talk, you ask a question too. This is marked as its own criterion, so a talk that runs out of time and leaves no room for questions costs points.

In the Faust model the partner asks: „Wie könnte man auch Menschen erreichen, die keine digitale Plattform benutzen?“ The answer goes straight to the point and adds concrete places: „Man sollte sich nicht nur auf das Internet verlassen. Informationen könnten zusätzlich am Schwarzen Brett, in Geschäften und in Arztpraxen hängen.“ Answer the question in your first sentence, then give one example.

Teil 2: Diskussion führen (leading a discussion)

The instruction: „Sie führen mit Ihrer Gesprächspartnerin oder Ihrem Gesprächspartner eine Diskussion. Tauschen Sie Argumente aus, reagieren Sie aufeinander und fassen Sie am Ende Ihre Position zusammen.“ The discussion takes 5 minutes for both of you together.

Under it are four cue words: Medienkompetenz? Zeitaufwand? Datenschutz? Zusammenarbeit? (media skills, time needed, data protection, working together). The teacher sheet says the cue words are only help, but all three printed tasks below must be done.

The three tasks you must do in Teil 2

  • „Tauschen Sie Ihren Standpunkt und Ihre Argumente aus.“ State your position and give reasons.
  • „Reagieren Sie auf die Argumente Ihrer Gesprächspartnerin oder Ihres Gesprächspartners.“ React to what your partner says, not only to the card.
  • „Fassen Sie am Ende zusammen: Sind Sie dafür oder dagegen?“ At the end, sum up: for or against.

Discussion moves from the Faust model

In the model, one speaker is for school podcasts and one is sceptical. They end with a shared position with conditions.

MoveGerman
State a position with a reason„Ich bin grundsätzlich dafür. (...)
Accept an objection and adjust„Der Einwand ist berechtigt.
Turn a counter argument into a condition„Das spricht nicht gegen das Projekt selbst, sondern für klare Regeln.“
Ask your partner„Was wäre für dich ein geeignetes Thema für die erste Folge?“
Move toward the other view„Unter diesen Bedingungen hat mich dein Vorschlag teilweise überzeugt.“
Sum up the result„Dann können wir unser Ergebnis so zusammenfassen: Wir unterstützen einen Schulpodcast, wenn die Teilnahme freiwillig ist, genügend Zeit eingeplant wird und klare Regeln zum Datenschutz gelten.“

How B2 speaking is marked

Each criterion gets a band from A to E. The points below are the ones the teacher sheet of this Faust paper lists; together they make 100. If a task gets E for Aufgabenerfüllung, that whole task scores 0.

Pass mark

Goethe B2 is modular. Sprechen is a module of its own with 100 points, and you pass it with 60. You can take Sprechen alone or together with Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, and each module you pass gets its own certificate.

How speaking practice works on Faust

You start the paper in your browser and speak into the microphone. An examiner voice leads you through both parts, and a second voice plays your partner in the discussion. If you prefer, choose "Without partner" and practise alone with the examiner.

Faust turns what you said into text and marks that text on the exam criteria above, with a reason for every lost point. One scored online paper per part is free, and the PDFs of every paper are free. Faust is an independent practice platform.

After Übungssatz 01, Übungssatz 02 and 03 of B2 Sprechen give you new topics with the same structure. They are linked below.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Goethe B2 Sprechen alone, without a partner?
Normally you are tested in pairs. A single exam is possible only in exceptional cases. It is set at 10 minutes, and one examiner takes the partner role in the discussion.
Can I read my talk from my notes?
No. You may use the short notes you made during the preparation time, but you have to speak freely. Write keywords, not sentences.
Do I need a partner to practise B2 speaking?
No. In the Faust speaking test a partner voice discusses with you, or you choose to practise alone. Both start without an account.
