Goethe-Zertifikat A2, Sprechen

Goethe A2 speaking practice: cards, your story and the calendar task

Goethe A2 Sprechen is a paired exam in three parts: you ask and answer personal questions with word cards, you talk about your own life from a card, and you find a time with your partner using two different calendars. There is no preparation time. Below are a real card set and calendar from a Faust practice paper, explained in English, and you can start that speaking paper free online, without an account.

You are tested with one partner, and the exam is set at 15 minutes for a pair. Two examiners run it, and before each part one of them explains the task. You get the cards in the exam itself, so there is nothing to prepare on paper.

Speaking counts 25 of the 100 points, and you need at least 15 of those 25 to pass. The walk through below uses Faust Übungssatz 01 for Goethe A2 Sprechen and the Faust model answers on its teacher sheet, which show one way to do each task and carry no score.

Danach stellt Ihr Partner/Ihre Partnerin vier Fragen und Sie antworten.“ You get four word cards, make one question from each, and your partner answers. Then you swap.

The example on the sheet: the card „Familie?“ becomes the question „Wo lebt Ihre Familie?“ with the answer „Meine Eltern leben in Köln, und meine Schwester wohnt in Bonn.“ Your four cards on this paper are Kochen?, Feierabend?, Freunde? and Sonntag?

Your four cards: questions and answers

From the Faust model answers. Use Sie with your partner, as the cards do.

CardQuestionAnswer
Kochen?„Was kochen Sie gern?“„Ich koche gern Gemüsesuppe.

Answer with two sentences, not one word

Each model answer has two sentences: the answer, then one more detail (when, with whom, where). In the model the partner often adds a question back, like „Und wann kochen Sie normalerweise?“, which keeps the exchange going. „Gemüsesuppe.“ alone would answer the question but shows very little German.

Teil 2: Von sich erzählen (talking about yourself)

You talk about your own life along the questions on your card, and then the examiner may ask you one or two more questions.

Card A on this paper: „Wie planen Sie eine Reise?“ with four cues: Reiseziel? Jahreszeit? Verkehrsmittel? Mit wem? (where to, which season, how you travel, with whom). Your partner gets card B: „Was machen Sie gern draußen?“ with Wo? Wann? Mit wem? Bei schlechtem Wetter?

Card A, cue by cue

From the Faust model answer. Every cue gets at least one sentence, and a reason with weil or und makes the answer fuller.

CueGerman you can say

Teil 3: Gemeinsam planen (finding a time together)

The instruction: „Sie planen etwas zusammen. Jede Person bekommt einen eigenen Kalender. Machen Sie Vorschläge, reagieren Sie auf Ihren Partner oder Ihre Partnerin und vereinbaren Sie gemeinsam einen Termin.“ Each of you has a different calendar for the same day. You suggest times, react, and agree on one.

Finden Sie einen Termin.“ You want to buy a birthday present for your friend Patrick together.

The two calendars for Freitag, 12. Juni

Person A sees only the left column, person B only the right one.

Person APerson B
08:00 bis 12:00 Arbeit09:00 bis 13:00 Arbeit
12:30 bis 13:30 Mittagessen mit Nina13:30 bis 14:30 Banktermin
14:00 bis 15:00 Fahrradwerkstatt15:00 bis 16:30 Schwimmen
18:00 bis 19:30 Sprachkurs18:30 bis 20:00 Besuch bei Tarek
20:00 Abendessen20:30 Abendessen

The solution: 16:30 to 18:00

A is free from 15:00 until the Sprachkurs at 18:00. B is swimming until 16:30 and free until the visit at 18:30. The only time both are free is between 16:30 and 18:00. You do not have to find it at once: the task is to suggest, refuse with a reason and agree, so a first suggestion that does not work is part of a good answer.

The Faust model does exactly that. A suggests half past three, B cannot, and they agree on five o'clock. They also say where they meet and what they buy, which makes the plan complete.

Phrases from the Faust model dialogue

What you doGerman
Suggest a time„Wollen wir das Geschenk am Freitag um halb vier kaufen?“

Suggest another time„Geht es um fünf Uhr?“
Agree and check your calendar„Ja, um fünf habe ich Zeit.

How A2 speaking is marked

Each criterion gets a band from A to E. The points below are the ones the teacher sheet of this Faust paper lists; together they make the 25 speaking points. An E for Aufgabenerfüllung sets that whole Teil to 0.

CriterionWhat it meansPoints for A, B, C, D, E
AufgabenerfüllungDoing what the task asks, taking your share of the conversation, the right toneTeil 1: 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5, 0. Teil 2 and Teil 3: 4, 3, 2, 1, 0
SpracheVocabulary and grammar, and how much mistakes get in the way of understandingTeil 1: 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5, 0. Teil 2 and Teil 3: 4, 3, 2, 1, 0
AusspracheSentence melody, word stress and single sounds5, 3.5, 2, 0.5, 0

Pass mark

Goethe A2 is scored as one exam: you pass with 60 of 100 points in total. Inside that, you need at least 45 of the 75 written points and at least 15 of the 25 speaking points. A strong written result cannot make up for fewer than 15 speaking points.

Practising A2 speaking on Faust

The Faust speaking test runs in your browser with your microphone. An examiner voice leads the three parts, and a partner voice asks you questions and plans the appointment with you. You can also choose "Without partner" and practise alone with the examiner.

Faust writes down what you said and marks it on the exam criteria, with a reason for every lost point. One scored online paper per part is free, and all PDFs are free. Faust is an independent practice platform.

For more practice, Übungssatz 02 and 03 of A2 Sprechen have new cards and new calendars. They are linked below.
