Goethe-Zertifikat C1, Sprechen
Goethe C1 speaking practice: the Vortrag and the Diskussion
Goethe C1 Sprechen is a paired exam in two parts: a structured talk (Vortrag) followed by questions, and a discussion with your partner that has to end in a shared recommendation. This page walks through a real C1 task card from a Faust practice paper in English, and you can start that paper free online, alone and without an account.

At C1 the examiners listen for more than correct German. Your talk needs a structure the listener can follow, every point on the card has to appear in it, and in the discussion you must react to your partner and reach a decision together.
You get 20 minutes to prepare on your own. You may take brief notes on paper and use them during the exam, but you speak freely; reading out a written text does not work at this level.
Teil 1: Vortrag halten, the task card
The card gives you two topics and you choose one. Teil 1 is set at 7 minutes per candidate: a well structured talk of 5 minutes that covers all four points, then 2 minutes of questions. In Übungssatz 01 of the Faust C1 papers, Thema 1 is „Bahn oder Auto: Wie soll Mobilität künftig gefördert werden?“
The four points you must cover
Each point is a task requirement. Leave one out and you lose marks for task completion, however good your German is.
A concrete example, not a general statement.
Take a side and give reasons.
Any country works, as long as you describe it.
- „Schlagen Sie eine konkrete Maßnahme vor, mit der Bahnreisen verlässlicher oder attraktiver werden könnten.“ One measure, explained well, beats a list of five.
A structure for the five minute talk
Each German line comes from the Faust model talk on the teacher sheet of this paper. It shows one possible answer and has no score.
| Step | What you do | German line |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Name the question and announce your plan, so the examiners hear the structure from the first sentence. |
| Point 1 | Make the example specific: who travels, where, and what tips the choice. |
| Point 2 | State your position, then limit it. A conceded point sounds like C1, a one sided speech does not. |
| Point 3 | Describe a country and show a contrast inside it. |
| Point 4 | Propose one measure and explain how it would work. |
| Close | Sum up your position in one sentence with its condition. |
The questions after your talk
When you finish, your partner and one examiner ask you questions. Fragen und Antworten has its own row on the marking sheet, with 12 points in the top band, more than any other row except Aussprache. So prepare for the obvious objection to your position.
In the Faust model, the question is „Würden günstigere Fahrkarten allein nicht schon ausreichen?“ The answer first accepts part of the point, then names the real problem, then offers a combined solution: „Günstigere Fahrkarten können die Entscheidung beeinflussen, aber sie lösen das Problem fehlender Verbindungen nicht.“ Accept, limit, propose: that pattern works for most follow up questions.
The second topic on this card is „Mobiles Arbeiten statt täglichem Pendeln: ein Modell für die Zukunft?“ Its points come in a different order and the last one asks for an outlook („Schließen Sie mit einem Ausblick …“), so build your outline from the card you chose, not from a memorised template.
Teil 2: Diskussion führen, the task card
Teil 2 is set at 5 minutes for both candidates together. You react to each other, cover all four points and agree on a shared recommendation. The topic in Übungssatz 01: „Besucherlenkung in Nationalparks“, with the question „Reservierungspflicht an stark besuchten Tagen?“
The four discussion points
Moves that carry a C1 discussion
Lines from the Faust model discussion on the teacher sheet. The examiners mark how you start, keep the talk going, react and close, so each move below has a job.
| Move | German line | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Open with a position and hand over | Ich finde reservierungspflichtige Zeitfenster an stark besuchten Tagen grundsätzlich sinnvoll, sofern sie nur für besonders empfindliche und beliebte Bereiche gelten. … Wie siehst du das? | You start the talk and give your partner room at once. |
| Disagree politely | Ich bin etwas skeptischer. | A clear but soft contrast keeps the discussion alive. |
| Shows you listened, which is what Interaktion rewards. |
| Build on the partner | Das würde mein organisatorisches Problem teilweise lösen. | Reacts to the last idea instead of starting a new speech. |
| Covers point 2: nature, guests and the region. |
| Add your country | Aus meinem Heimatland Polen kenne ich unterschiedliche Modelle. | Covers point 3 inside the conversation. |
| Moves the talk from opinion to a decision. |
| Close with the recommendation | Unsere gemeinsame Empfehlung wäre also, den Park trotz der Reservierungspflicht auszuwählen, allerdings unter drei Bedingungen: eine gemeinsame Gruppenbuchung, eine faire Umbuchungsmöglichkeit bei Verspätungen und eine attraktive Alternativroute. | Covers point 4. Without a joint recommendation the task is not complete. |

How C1 speaking is marked
The criteria on the teacher sheet of this Faust paper. Each criterion gets a band from A to E, and examiners give only these values, nothing in between. If task completion gets an E, the whole task scores 0.
| Criterion | What the examiners listen for | Points per band, A to E |
|---|---|---|
| Aufgabenerfüllung (task completion) | Content, length and the language functions the task asks for; the four points are requirements, not separate criteria | Teil 1: 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5, 0. Teil 2: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 |
| Kohärenz (coherence) | How you build and link sentences, and how fluently you speak | 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5, 0 |
| Fragen und Antworten (questions and answers) | Whether your answers to follow up questions fit in content and language | 12, 9, 6, 3, 0 |
| Interaktion (interaction) | Starting, keeping up and closing the conversation, and reacting to your partner | 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 |
| Register und soziokulturelle Angemessenheit | Whether your German fits the situation and the person you speak to | No separate points; part of the overall judgement |
| Wortschatz (vocabulary) | Range, variety and control of words, and how much errors get in the way | 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5, 0 in each Teil |
| Strukturen (grammar) | Range, variety and control of grammar and sentence building | 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5, 0 in each Teil |
| Aussprache (pronunciation) | Sentence melody, word stress and single sounds | 16, 12, 8, 4, 0 for both parts together |
Pass mark
Goethe C1 is modular. Sprechen is a module of its own with 100 points, and you pass it with 60. You can take Sprechen alone or together with Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, and each passed module gets its own certificate.
How Faust marks your speaking
You can practise both parts alone, without a partner. Faust marks Sprechen on the Goethe exam criteria, with a reason for every lost point.
One scored online paper per part is free, and every PDF is free. The candidate sheet and the teacher sheet with the Faust model answers for both parts are free on the page of this paper. When you finish Übungssatz 01, Übungssatz 02 is the next paper in the same format.
Faust Academy is an independent practice platform.
Frequently asked questions
- How long is the Goethe C1 talk?
- Teil 1 is set at 7 minutes per candidate, talk and questions together. The Faust card splits this into a talk of 5 minutes and 2 minutes of questions. Teil 2, the discussion, is 5 minutes for both of you together.
- How is C1 speaking different from B2?
- At C1 you get 20 minutes to prepare instead of 15, and Teil 1 is set at 7 minutes per candidate instead of 4. On the Faust C1 cards the talk must cover four set points, and the discussion has to end in a recommendation you agree on together.
- Can I use notes in the speaking exam?
- Yes. You may use the brief notes you made during the 20 minutes of preparation. Write key words, not full sentences, so you speak freely.
- What if I take the exam without a partner?
- In exceptional cases the exam is held with one candidate. It is then set at 15 minutes, and in Teil 2 an examiner takes the role of your discussion partner.
