Goethe-Zertifikat B1, Sprechen
Goethe B1 speaking practice: plan, present, discuss
Goethe B1 Sprechen is a paired exam in three parts: you plan something with your partner, you present a topic using five slides, and you talk about each other's presentations. Below are a real planning task and presentation topic from a Faust practice paper, explained in English. You can start that speaking paper free online, without an account, and practise it alone.

No signup needed. The practice exam starts right in the browser.
You prepare alone for 15 minutes and may take short notes into the exam. The exam itself is set at 15 minutes for a pair, with two examiners. The partner is another candidate, put together with you at random.
Many people search for B1 speaking topics. You cannot know the exam topics in advance, but you can know what each task asks for. The walk through below uses Faust Übungssatz 01 for Goethe B1 Sprechen, task by task.
Teil 1: Gemeinsam etwas planen (planning together)
You make suggestions, react to your partner's suggestions and reach decisions together. On this paper the task takes 3 minutes.
Your German class is organising an afternoon of exercise for older people at a community centre, and you two plan it.
The four questions on the planning card
Talk about every question and decide something for each. A list of ideas without a decision does not complete the task.
- „Wann soll der Bewegungsnachmittag stattfinden?“ When?
- „Welche Bewegungsangebote und Pausen soll es geben?“ Which activities and breaks?
- „Welche Materialien und Getränke werden gebraucht?“ Which equipment and drinks?
- „Wer übernimmt welche Aufgabe?“ Who does what?
Planning phrases from the Faust model dialogue
The teacher sheet of this paper has a Faust model dialogue. It shows one possible answer and carries no score.
| What you do | German |
|---|---|
| Open and suggest a date | „Wollen wir zuerst den Termin festlegen? Ich würde Samstag, den 18. Oktober, vorschlagen.“ |
| Accept and add a consequence | „Gute Idee.
Teil 2: Ein Thema präsentieren (presenting a topic)
The instruction: „Wählen Sie Thema 1 oder Thema 2. You choose one of two topics and present it along five slides (Folien), without reading everything from your notes. On this paper the talk takes 3 minutes.
Thema 1 on this paper is „Digitale Helfer am Arbeitsplatz“ with the question „mehr Zeit oder mehr Stress?“ (digital tools at work: more time or more stress?). Thema 2 is „Vier Tage arbeiten, drei Tage frei?“ (a four day week). The teacher sheet says Erfüllung in this task is judged on how you treat the five slides, so each slide is a part of your score.
Thema 1, slide by slide
Left: what each slide asks. Right: lines from the Faust model presentation on the teacher sheet.
| Folie | The slide asks | German you can say |
|---|---|---|
Your home country, with examples.
Slide 4 is three tasks in one
Folie 4 asks for advantages and disadvantages, your opinion, and a reason with an example. Candidates often give pros and cons and then move on to the thank you. Say your opinion in its own sentence, starting with „Meiner Meinung nach“ or „Ich finde“, and add weil or zum Beispiel.
Teil 3: Über die Präsentationen sprechen (talking about the presentations)
The card: „Nach der Präsentation Ihres Partners oder Ihrer Partnerin: Geben Sie eine konkrete Rückmeldung und stellen Sie eine passende Frage zum präsentierten Thema.“ and „Nach Ihrer Präsentation: Reagieren Sie auf die Rückmeldung und beantworten Sie die Fragen Ihres Partners oder Ihrer Partnerin sowie der Prüferinnen und Prüfer.“ On this paper this part takes 2 minutes.
So you do two things after each talk. After your partner's talk: one concrete piece of feedback and one question. After your own talk: thank them for the feedback and answer the questions from your partner and from an examiner.
From the Faust model, feedback: „Deine Präsentation über digitale Helfer fand ich sehr klar. Das freut mich.“ To ask well, listen to your partner's talk for one example you can ask about.

How B1 speaking is marked
The teacher sheet of this Faust paper lists these criteria. Each gets a band from A to E; Kohärenz goes from A to D. An E for Erfüllung sets the whole task to 0 points.
| Criterion | What the examiners listen for |
|---|---|
| Erfüllung | Did you do what each task asks, with enough content? In Teil 2, did you cover all five slides? |
| Interaktion | Starting the conversation, keeping it going, ending it, and reacting to your partner |
| Register | Language that fits the situation and the person you talk to |
| Wortschatz | Range and control of your vocabulary |
| Strukturen | Range and control of your grammar |
| Kohärenz | Sentences that connect, and a line of thought the listener can follow |
| Aussprache | Sentence melody, word stress and single sounds |
Pass mark
Goethe B1 is modular. Sprechen is scored out of 100 points, and you pass the module with 60. You can take Sprechen alone or with Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, and each passed module gets a certificate.
Practising B1 speaking on Faust
The speaking test runs in your browser with your microphone. An examiner voice explains each Teil, and a partner voice plans with you and listens to your presentation. You can also choose "Without partner" and work alone with the examiner.
Faust writes down what you said and marks it on the exam criteria, with a reason for every lost point. One scored online paper per part is free, and all PDFs are free. Faust is an independent practice platform.
Next step: Übungssatz 02 and 03 of B1 Sprechen bring new planning tasks and slide topics. They are linked below.
