How many points do I need to pass Goethe B1?

You need 60 of 100 points in each module: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. Each module counts on its own, so a high score in one module does not make up for a low score in another. The same rule applies to B2, C1 and C2.

How many answers can I get wrong in B1 Lesen or Hören?

Lesen and Hören at B1, B2 and C1 have 30 items each. 18 correct answers give 60 points, so you can get 12 wrong and still pass the module. 17 correct answers give 57 points, which is not a pass.

How is the Goethe A1 exam scored?

Hören, Lesen, Schreiben and Sprechen give 15 points each. The Goethe-Institut multiplies the points by 1.66, adds them and rounds the total. You pass with 60 of 100 points, which means 36 of the 60 points before the factor. You must take every part.

Can I pass Goethe A2 with a weak Sprechen part?

Only if Sprechen reaches 15 of 25 points. A2 needs 60 of 100 points in total, at least 45 of 75 written points and at least 15 of 25 speaking points. A total of 74 with 14 speaking points is not a pass.

What happens if I fail one module?

At B1, B2, C1 and C2 you keep the modules you passed and retake only the failed module. You can retake a Goethe exam or a single module as often as you want. The A1 exam can only be retaken as a whole.

Is this an official Goethe result?

Pass rules for every Goethe level

The Goethe-Institut sets these rules in the exam rules of each level. They apply to exams held after 1 September 2025.

Worked examples for every level

A1: Hören 10, Lesen 9, Schreiben 9 and Sprechen 8 points give 36 of 60 points. 36 × 1.66 = 59.76, rounded to 60. This is a pass. With 35 points the result is 58, which is not a pass.
A2: Lesen 16, Hören 16 and Schreiben 16 points give 60 of 75 written points. Sprechen gives 14 points. The total is 74, but Sprechen is below the minimum of 15, so the exam is not passed.
B1: 18 of 30 correct answers in Lesen give 60 points, a pass. 17 of 30 in Hören give 57 points, not a pass. With 72 in Schreiben and 68 in Sprechen you pass three modules and need to retake only Hören.
B2: 24 correct answers in Lesen give 80 points and 21 in Hören give 70. With 64 in Schreiben and 91 in Sprechen you pass all four modules.
C1: 27 correct answers in Lesen give 90 points and 19 in Hören give 63. Schreiben has 58 points, 2 below the pass mark. You pass three modules and retake Schreiben.
C2: Lesen 61, Hören 74 and Schreiben 60 are passes, because 60 points are enough. Sprechen has 59 points and is not passed. You retake only Sprechen.

Reading and listening at B1, B2 and C1: correct answers to points

Each of these modules has 30 items with 1 point each. The Goethe-Institut multiplies the correct answers by 3.33 and rounds the result. You need 18 correct answers for 60 points, so you can get 12 wrong.
