Each set above is one full exam part. Start it online and you get the same tasks and the same time limit as in the exam. Reading and listening are scored against the answer key when you hand in. Writing and speaking are marked on the exam criteria, and you see your result out of 25 for each part.

If you prefer paper, open the PDF of the same set, print it and set a timer. The answer key for reading and listening and the assessment notes for writing and speaking are on the paper page of each set.

Worked example: Lesen Teil 1, question 2

In Lesen Teil 1 you read one newspaper article and answer five questions with a, b or c. Set 01 has an article about a cat hotel in Lübeck. This is the paragraph that matters: "Vor dem Aufenthalt fragt Timo nach dem Futter und den Gewohnheiten des Tieres. Außerdem bittet er die Besitzer, die Lieblingsdecke ihrer Katze mitzubringen. Der vertraute Geruch hilft vielen Tieren in den neuen Zimmern."

The question: "2. Was sollen die Besitzer für ihre Katze mitbringen?" (What should the owners bring for their cat?) The options are "a) das Futter für den ganzen Aufenthalt", "b) ein besonderes Spielzeug" and "c) die Lieblingsdecke des Tieres".

The right answer: c

The word Futter is in the text, so many learners pick a. But read who does what. Timo "fragt nach dem Futter" (he asks about the food), which means he collects information. Only the blanket is something he asks the owners to bring: "bittet er die Besitzer, die Lieblingsdecke ihrer Katze mitzubringen". The answer key of set 01 gives c. Option b, the toy, is not in the text at all.

The trap in this example: a word from the text appears in a wrong option, but the verb around it says something else. Here the text says "fragt nach", not "bringen mit". Check the verb, not only the noun.

How to work through Lesen Teil 1

  • Read the five questions before you read the article, so you know what to look for.
  • Find the paragraph for each question. The questions follow the order of the text.
  • Match the verb as well as the noun. "Fragt nach dem Futter" and "bringt das Futter mit" are different facts.
  • Pick the option that says the same thing in other words. A word that appears in both the text and the option is not enough.

How to use the papers before your exam

  • Start with one reading and one listening set online. Your score per part shows which part needs the most work.
  • Keep the exam order for a full mock: Lesen (30 minutes), Hören (30 minutes), then Schreiben (30 minutes), with no break between them.
  • Write the SMS and the email by hand and count your words. The SMS asks for 20 to 30 words and the email for 30 to 40 words, 15 minutes each.
  • Practise speaking out loud with a partner. Ask questions, tell something about your life, then plan something together. There is no preparation time in the exam, so do the same.
  • Work through a new set every few days and compare your score with the pass rule: 60 of 100 points in total.

How the A2 points add up

Each of the four parts counts 25 of 100 points. The pass rule is 60 of 100 points in total, with at least 45 of the 75 written points and at least 15 of the 25 speaking points. A strong reading score cannot cover a weak speaking score, so practise all four parts.

Your score per part on the papers above helps you see where you stand. Add the four results out of 25 and check both limits: the written part and the speaking part.
