The telc Deutsch B1 oral exam is a conversation with a partner: 15 minutes for a pair, after 20 minutes of preparation. It has three parts: Teil 1 Einander kennenlernen, Teil 2 Über ein Thema sprechen, Teil 3 Gemeinsam etwas planen.

You get all task sheets during the 20 minutes of preparation. You may take your notes into the exam room, but you should not read them out as a finished text. If only one person is registered, an examiner takes the partner role.

Teil 1 Einander kennenlernen (3 minutes)

You and your partner get to know each other. The shared card lists these topics, as a guide, not a checklist:

  • Ihr Name
  • Ihre Herkunft
  • Ihre Wohnsituation
  • Ihre Familie
  • Wo Sie Deutsch gelernt haben
  • Ihre Schule, Ihr Studium oder Ihr Beruf
  • Ihre Sprachen: welche, seit wann und warum

Questions to ask your partner in Teil 1

Teil 1 is a dialogue, so ask as much as you answer. The examiners may add questions, for example about your hobbies or your weekend.

  • Was machst du beruflich?

Topic: „Schwierige Rätsel in der Freizeit“ (difficult puzzles in your free time). Each of you reads a different person’s opinion from a magazine.

Teil 2 has two steps. First, each of you tells the other what the person on your card thinks. Then you talk together: your own opinion, your own experience, and your reaction to what your partner says. It must be one conversation, not two separate talks.

Useful phrases for Teil 2

Teil 3 Gemeinsam etwas planen (6 minutes)

The situation: you are in the same German course and want to organise a book evening (Bücherabend) for your course group. People bring a book and present it briefly, and people without a book should feel welcome too. There is only a little money. Your planning list:

  • Termin und Dauer des Abends
  • Ein geeigneter Raum
  • Auswahl der Bücher und Ablauf der Vorstellungen
  • Einladung der Kursgruppe
  • Getränke und Kosten
  • One open line, for your own ideas

Useful phrases for Teil 3

Make suggestions with a reason, react to your partner’s ideas, and finish with a clear plan: what happens and who does what.

What the examiners score

Each part is marked on four criteria. The table gives the points for the bands A, B, C and D.

CriterionTeil 1Teil 2 and Teil 3, each
Ausdrucksfähigkeit (expression, vocabulary)4, 3, 1, 08, 6, 2, 0
Aufgabenbewältigung (taking part, keeping the talk going)4, 3, 1, 08, 6, 2, 0
Formale Richtigkeit (grammar)4, 3, 1, 08, 6, 2, 0
Aussprache und Intonation (pronunciation)3, 2, 1, 06, 4, 2, 0
Maximum1530

What this means for you

  • Teil 2 and Teil 3 are worth twice as much as Teil 1. Use your preparation time on them.
  • Asking your partner questions and helping each other count in your favour.
  • A memorised speech does not show interaction. React to what your partner actually says.

What you need to pass

You pass telc Deutsch B1 with 60 percent in the written exam and 60 percent in the oral exam: at least 135 of 225 written points and at least 45 of 75 oral points. The oral exam must reach its 45 points on its own: a strong written result does not make up for it.

How speaking practice works in Faust

You start this speaking paper without an account and speak your answers. Faust marks each part on the four telc criteria and gives a reason for each score.

Practise the phrases above out loud, best with a partner. When you finish Übungssatz 1, take Übungssatz 2 next for new cards.
