Write the free telc B2 email

No signup needed. The practice exam starts right in the browser.

In the writing part of telc Deutsch B2 you get two tasks, Aufgabe A and Aufgabe B, and you write one email. You have 30 minutes, and choosing the task is part of that time. You write at least 150 words.

First, choose A or B

Faust paper Übungssatz 01 gives you this choice. Aufgabe A, Bitte um Informationen: you cook as a volunteer for a neighbourhood lunch and ask a cooking school if its course on safe cooking for large groups fits you. Aufgabe B, Beschwerde: a bike workshop did not do the agreed work before your cycling trip. This page works through Aufgabe B.

Decide fast. Take the task where you can fill three points with your own ideas most easily.

The rules on the task sheet

The 30 minutes include your choice.
  • „Schreiben Sie mindestens 150 Wörter.“ At least 150 words.
  • „Bearbeiten Sie drei Leitpunkte oder zwei Leitpunkte und einen eigenen zur Situation passenden Aspekt.“ Cover three of the four points, or two plus one of your own that fits the situation.
  • „Verwenden Sie Betreff, Anrede und Schlussformel.“ Use a subject line, a greeting and a closing.

Aufgabe B: the situation

The ad you answered promises a tour check of brakes, gears, tyres and lights, adjustment of brakes and gears where needed, a talk with you before any extra repair, a test ride, and a list of the work done when you collect the bike. Use these promises in your complaint.

The four Leitpunkte

Cover three of them well. The model below covers 1, 2 and 3.

Sam Keller

How the model covers each Leitpunkt

  • Leitpunkt 1, the agreed work and what you found: the first paragraph names the agreed work (lights, brakes) and what is still wrong (rear light, rear brake, no list of the work done).
  • Leitpunkt 2, why you are unhappy and what you want: the second paragraph links the faults to the promise in the ad and asks for a free repair with written confirmation.
  • Leitpunkt 3, your trip and the deadline: the third paragraph describes the trip, explains why the lights matter on it and gives a clear deadline.
  • Leitpunkt 4 is left out, which the rule allows. Each covered point gets two or more sentences, because the answer key says one is not enough: „Eine angemessene Behandlung erfordert mehr als ein einziges Satzgefüge.“
  • Linking words such as jedoch, denn, deshalb, da and daher join the ideas, and the email is well over the 150 word minimum.

The three marking criteria

Each criterion gets A, B, C or D. The raw points of the three criteria are added and multiplied by 3, which gives up to 45 points. Only the email you chose is marked.

CriterionWhat it checksRaw points
Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion)Three Leitpunkte, or two plus one point of your own, each treated in enough depth for B2A 5, B 3, C 1, D 0
Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design)A style that fits the reader and the situation, range of words, clear structure, links between ideasA 5, B 3, C 1, D 0
Formale Richtigkeit (accuracy)Grammar, spelling and punctuationA 5, B 3, C 1, D 0

What costs points

  • One sentence per Leitpunkt: a covered point needs more than one sentence.
  • A list of points with no links between them: it rules out B in Kommunikative Gestaltung.
  • A style that changes between formal and informal: it also rules out B in Kommunikative Gestaltung.
  • No Betreff, Anrede or Schlussformel. You do not need an address or a date.

Frequently asked questions

How many words for telc B2 writing?
At least 150. The task sheet says „Schreiben Sie mindestens 150 Wörter.“ More words do not help on their own: the marks go to how well you cover the points and link your ideas.
Do I have to answer all four points?
No. Cover three Leitpunkte, or two plus one point of your own that fits the situation. Give each one more than one sentence.
Formal or informal?
Formal. You write to a company or a school you do not know, so use Sie, a Betreff, a greeting such as „Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,“ and a closing such as „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“.
