Making models

Graham When I was a boy, I made castles from papier-mâché. A teacher at my school showed me how. Then I ran a gym for thirty years and had no time. Now I've stopped working, I've started again. My hobby costs almost nothing: I only need old newspapers, flour and water. I work in my children's old bedroom, so there's lots of space. My wife laughs at my castles, but she never helps! When one is finished, I give it to the primary school near us. My last castle took a year, so the next one will be smaller. Linda I didn't make anything as a child. I started making model houses five years ago, after my daughter gave me a book that showed me how. Now my grandson Sam, who's eight, comes every weekend and we build them together. I work at the kitchen table, as I always have. The paints cost more than I thought, but I don't mind. Some friends have asked to buy my houses, but I always say no, because they're special to me. Next, Sam and I want to make the whole village, not just one house! Ravi My father made model boats when I was young, but I only watched him. I learned to build them myself by watching videos on the internet. At first I worked in my flat, but there was no room for the boats, so I moved everything into the garden shed. Good wood is expensive, so sometimes I sell a boat at the local market and buy more. I'm in a boat club, and we meet on Sundays to sail our boats on the lake, but I always build alone at home. I want my next boat to be faster.

Part 3

Questions 14 to 18 For each question, choose the correct answer.

Writing the stars

Megan Price, 34, writes the star-sign page for City Life, a free magazine in Bristol. She came to the magazine eight years ago, after she saw an advertisement for an office job there. Two years later, the woman who wrote the star-sign page went to live in Spain, and the editor asked Megan to try writing it. She has loved the stars since she was a little girl, when she and her dad looked at them on clear nights. But Megan doesn't think the stars know anything about our future. 'Some readers believe their horoscope tells them what's going to happen that week. I don't,' she says. 'I enjoy giving people small, useful ideas, like phoning an old friend or going to bed earlier.' Her editor says more people read Megan's page than any other page in the magazine. Her husband, Owen, isn't interested in the stars. But every Friday, when the new magazine comes out, he reads his horoscope. 'Then on Sunday, I tell Megan all the things in it that didn't happen to me,' he says. They both laugh about it. Megan finds her ideas in her own life. 'When my car broke down last spring, I wrote about waiting calmly.' Readers sometimes send her letters. One reader, Joan, wrote that she moved to a new flat because her horoscope said it was time for a change. She loves it there. 'It was lovely to hear,' Megan says, 'but it made me think. People really listen to me! So now I never tell anyone to change something big in their life.' Some weeks, it is hard to find twelve new pieces of advice. 'But I love this page,' she says, 'and I don't want to stop.'

14. How did Megan start writing the star-sign page?

A) She answered an advertisement for the job

B) The editor asked her after the old writer left

C) She studied the stars at college

15. What does Megan think about the horoscopes she writes?

A) They help people to know what will happen in their week

B) They give people simple ideas for their week

C) They are less important than the other pages

16. What does Megan's husband Owen do every week?

A) He tells Megan which things in his horoscope didn't happen

B) He gives Megan ideas for the star-sign page

C) He reads the page to Megan before it goes to the magazine

17. After Joan's letter, Megan decided to

A) stop telling readers to make big changes in their lives

B) answer readers' letters on the star-sign page

C) ask more readers to write to her

18. What is the writer trying to do in this article?

An email from Paul

From: Paul To: Kate Hi Kate, Thanks for your email. I lost my job in March, so we have less money. But we find free things for the children to do. On Saturday, the children went to a free art class at the library. On Sunday, they had a picnic with their friends in the park. Lisa also found a cheap swimming club. The club where they go is near us. At the moment I am looking for a new job. A bike shop needs an assistant. My interview for the job is on Friday. If they give it to me, I will start in December. See you soon, Paul
