Student helpers
Priya I've been a helper for two years. I usually meet students in the café in the college library. Sometimes I help them make a study plan for their exams. The hardest thing for me is the evening. When I get home, I often keep thinking about the people I talked to that day, and it isn't easy to stop. But the work has changed me in a good way. I've got a part-time job in a shop, and now I feel much more confident when I speak to customers. Next year I'm going to teach the training course for new helpers. Owen In my first year at college, I felt very worried about everything, so I went to the student support team myself. They really helped me, and that's why I became a helper. I study computing, and I did my training course last month. Before my first meeting with a student, I was really nervous, but it went very well. We meet in a quiet room on the second floor. People think helpers give lots of advice, but students don't usually want that from me. Listening to them is the most important thing. Grace A friend told me about the team, and I joined last autumn. In my first few weeks I didn't like the work at all, and I almost stopped. Now I love it! I often go for a walk with a student in the park next to the college, because some people find it easier to talk outside. Students often like my ideas for things to do at the weekend, like cooking or going to the cinema. I'm leaving college next summer, so I've got lots of exams this year and it's hard to find time for everything. After that I want to study nursing.

Part 3
Questions 14 to 18 For each question, choose the correct answer.
The woman who reads your messages
Lots of people in the town of Kelmouth listen to Kelmouth Radio, and many of them send messages to the small local station. Priya Shah is the person who reads them. For five years, Priya presented the morning programme. Now she works in a quiet office behind the studio, and her job is to read and reply to everything that listeners send. When someone asks to hear a song, she gives the request to Daniel. He and his team decide which music goes into each programme. Listeners can write an email, call the station or fill in a form on its website. Most people send emails, but Priya prefers phone calls. 'A call can take a long time,' she says, 'but I love them. I can hear in someone's voice if they're happy or angry.' Priya reads every single message and tries to reply within two days. Friends often say that angry messages must be difficult for her. 'Not really,' she says. 'They often tell us something useful.' Last spring the station moved its jazz programme from Sunday evening to midnight. Lots of listeners wrote to complain, so the station put it back on Sunday evening. On Priya's desk there is a letter from last winter. Mrs Joan Hale, who is ninety-one, wrote it by hand. Since she moved to a new flat, the afternoon programme helps her feel less lonely. Priya has never met Mrs Hale, but she keeps the letter there. 'When I read it, I remember that radio really matters to people,' she says. So what would Priya like listeners to do? 'Please keep sending us messages,' she says. 'Even a few lines help. It doesn't matter if you email, phone or use the website form. And we want to hear about the good things and the bad things.'

From: Ellie To: Paul Hi Paul, Do you remember Mrs Carter, our old music teacher? Yesterday the town gave her a prize for her work. She taught at our school for more than forty years!
