The Goethe exam in Pakistan: cities, documents and results
The Goethe-Institut Pakistan runs German exams from A1 to C2 with weekly and monthly dates in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. You bring your original passport, your original CNIC and the printed booking slip, and your results appear in My Goethe.de, which the Goethe-Institut Pakistan says usually takes 20 working days.

Which exams you can take
The Goethe-Institut Pakistan lists the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 for young people (Fit in Deutsch 1) and for adults (Start Deutsch 1), A2 for young people and adults, B1, B2, C1 and C2, the TestDaF for university study, and the Goethe-Test PRO for work.
Adults take the A1 exam as Start Deutsch 1. Fit in Deutsch 1 is the A1 version for young people. You pass Start Deutsch 1 with 60 of 100 points over the whole exam, and you must take every part.
What to bring on exam day

- Pakistani nationals: original passport, printed PTN slip (the booking confirmation) and original CNIC.
- Afghan nationals: original passport, printed PTN slip and original Tazkara with an English translation.
- If an office such as the German consulate holds your passport, bring the confirmation letter from that office to the registration office.
Payment, results and corrections

- Pay the exam fee within 24 hours of booking, or the registration is cancelled automatically.
- Pay by bank transfer or deposit slip, with your PTN as the payment reference. The Goethe-Institut Pakistan does not accept cash, cheques, pay orders or credit cards.
- Your results appear in the My Goethe.de portal. The Goethe-Institut Pakistan says results are usually published 20 working days after the exam.
- You can ask for changes to your certificate within 6 months of the date of issue. A correction of the spelling of your name or your date of birth after the certificate goes live costs 3000 rupees.
- To see your marked exam, write to the viewing address on the results page. The Prüfungsordnung allows this within three months of the result.
German A1 for the spouse visa
A spouse who joins a partner in Germany must be able to communicate in German at least in a simple way (section 30 AufenthG). German law sets simple German at level A1 (section 2 (9) AufenthG). The law lists exceptions, for example for spouses of EU Blue Card holders.
The German embassy or consulate that handles your visa decides which certificate it accepts. Ask it before you book the exam.
The Goethe-Institut Pakistan says that Goethe certificates from A1 to C2 do not expire, but many institutions and employers expect a certificate that is not older than two years.
