Here is a telc A2 reading task from a Faust practice paper, solved in simple English: the answer and the reason for it. The full A2 reading paper is free to start online, and its PDF with answers is free too.

telc Deutsch A2, also called Start Deutsch 2, is a German exam. The reading part (Lesen) has 3 parts with 15 tasks, and each correct answer gives 1 point. Reading has no time of its own: you have 50 minutes for reading and writing together.

The three parts test everyday reading: a store guide, a short everyday text and a page of small ads. Below you see one task from each part, from Faust practice paper telc A2 Lesen Übungssatz 1. Faust papers are independent practice in the telc format.

### Teil 3: match five situations to eight ads

In Teil 3 you read eight short ads (a to h) and five situations (11 to 15). For each situation you find the ad that fits. One situation has no fitting ad, and for that one you write x. This is the part with the hardest trap, so we start here.

The instruction on the paper: "Lesen Sie die Anzeigen a bis h und die Aufgaben 11 bis 15. Welche Anzeige passt zu welcher Situation? Für eine Aufgabe gibt es keine Lösung. Schreiben Sie hier den Buchstaben x."

### Situation 13

"13. Ihr Vater möchte einen Computer für einen Monat mieten. Er will zuerst ausprobieren, ob er damit gut zurechtkommt."

In English: your father wants to rent a computer for one month. He wants to try first whether he can manage with it.

### The two ads that look like a match

Both ads are about computers. Read them and look for the word mieten (to rent).

- Ad h, a course on safe online shopping: "Unser Kurs zeigt, wie Sie zuverlässige Internetshops erkennen und beim Bezahlen aufpassen. Zwei Montagabende, jeweils 18.30 bis 20 Uhr. Für die praktischen Übungen müssen alle ihren eigenen Laptop mitbringen."

### Answer: x, no ad fits

The situation has a clear condition: the father wants to rent (mieten) a computer for one month. He does not want to buy one.

Ad g is the trap. It sells computers, and it even shows you in the shop how they work, which sounds like "try it first". But one short sentence closes the door: "Bei uns können Sie die Geräte nur kaufen." Nur kaufen means you can only buy. No renting.

Ad h does not fit either. It is a course, not a computer, and everyone must bring their own laptop ("müssen alle ihren eigenen Laptop mitbringen"). The father has no computer yet. No other ad offers a computer at all, so the answer is x.

### How to solve Teil 3

- Mark every condition in the situation: what the person wants, when, and for how long. In situation 13 that is mieten and für einen Monat.
- Find the ads on the same topic, then test each condition against the ad text. The same topic is not enough.
- Watch small words that rule an ad out: nur (only), müssen (must), kein (no).
- Exactly one of the five situations has no ad. If none of your answers is x, check the situations again.

### Teil 1: the store guide, situation 1

In Teil 1 you read a guide that lists what is on each floor of a store. For five situations you choose a, b or c. The guide in this paper is "Kaufhaus Nebenan". On the ground floor it lists: "Kundenservice; Beratung zur Ratenzahlung: Was bezahlen Sie insgesamt?"

The situation: "1. Sie möchten vor dem Kauf wissen, wie viel eine Waschmaschine bei Zahlung in Raten insgesamt kostet." The options are a) Erdgeschoss, b) 2. Stock, c) anderes Stockwerk.

Answer: a, Erdgeschoss (ground floor). The word Waschmaschine makes you look for household goods (Küche und Haushalt, 1. Stock), but the person wants advice on paying in instalments (Ratenzahlung) and the total price (insgesamt). That advice is on the ground floor.

### Teil 2: the short text, statement 7

In Teil 2 you read a short text and decide for five statements: richtig (true) or falsch (false). In this paper the text is about a party in the courtyard of a building, the Hoffest. Last year Eva König, who lives in the building, was angry about loud music late at night.

The statement: "7. Eva König findet die neue Regel für die Musik schlecht."

Answer: falsch. Eva was angry about last year, not about the new rule. With the music ending at 21 Uhr she can sleep, and she wants to join the party. The word geärgert (was angry) is in the text, but it belongs to last year.

### telc A2 reading at a glance

3 parts, 15 tasks, 15 points. Reading and writing share 50 minutes.

| Part | What you read | Tasks | How you answer |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Teil 1 | A guide to the floors of a store or building | 1 to 5 | a, b or c |
| Teil 2 | A short text about everyday life | 6 to 10 | richtig or falsch |
| Teil 3 | Eight short ads, a to h | 11 to 15 | A letter from a to h, or x when no ad fits |

### How many points you need

You pass telc Deutsch A2 (Start Deutsch 2) with at least 36 of 60 points in total. The written exam gives 45 points and the oral exam 15. Reading gives 15 of the written points. There is no separate pass mark for reading: written and oral points count together.

### How Faust marks this paper

Faust checks each answer against the answer key of the paper: 1 point for each correct answer, 15 points in total, the same as in the exam. The free PDF has the same key and a short reason for every answer.

### After this paper

Then do telc A2 Lesen Übungssatz 2. It has the same three parts with new texts and new traps. Do it in one sitting and time yourself, because in the exam the writing tasks share the same 50 minutes.
