## The Goethe exam in India: centres, levels and preparation

In India the Goethe-Institut, called Max Mueller Bhavan, runs German exams from A1 to C2 in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata, with more exam locations in their regions and at Goethe-Zentren. Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, B1, B2 and C1 are also offered as digital exams on institute laptops.

This page collects what the official Goethe-Institut India page says about exams, checked on 25 September 2026, and the German rules on the levels that Indian candidates need for a visa, training, work or study. Dates and fees change often, so the page links the official pages for them instead of copying them.

The exam is the same in India as in Germany. The tasks, the marking and the pass marks follow the same Goethe rules worldwide.

### Which exams the Goethe-Institut India offers

The Goethe-Institut India lists the Goethe-Zertifikat at every level from A1 to C2, the Goethe-Test PRO for work, and the TestDaF for university study. It recommends its adult exams from the age of 16, and the C2 exam from the age of 18.

Digital exams take place at the institute on its laptops with a German keyboard. You do Lesen, Hören and Schreiben on the laptop, with headphones for Hören, and Sprechen with examiners. The Goethe-Institut India offers the digital format for A1: Start Deutsch 1, B1, B2 and C1.

The Goethe-Institut India warns against offers that promise exams or certificates. It says to book only on its website, because that is the only safe way.

### Which level your goal needs

From German law and the Goethe-Institut. The office that handles your case decides which certificate it accepts.

### Nursing and care work

If you learn German for a nursing job in Germany, the level you need depends on the recognition of your qualification. Ask the German authority that handles your recognition, or your employer, which level and which certificate it accepts before you book an exam.

### Vocational training (Ausbildung)

For a qualified vocational training (Ausbildung) visa, you show adequate German (B1) unless the school has checked your German or you will take a German course before the training (section 16a AufenthG).

Goethe B1 is modular, so you can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen together or one by one. Check with your training company or school which modules it needs to see.

- Find your nearest Goethe-Institut or Goethe-Zentrum in the table above and open its exam page on goethe.de.
- Check the level your goal needs with the office, employer or school that will receive the certificate.
- Decide between the paper and the digital format where both exist. The tasks and marking are the same.
- Look up the current dates and fee on the official page. The fee is set by each test centre under its local fee rules.
- Take a practice paper at your level first. If you pass it with a margin, book the exam.

**Where can I take the Goethe exam in India?**

At the Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan) in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata, at the exam locations listed with them, and at the Goethe-Zentren in Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Trivandrum.

**Can I take the Goethe exam on a computer in India?**

Yes, for some exams. The Goethe-Institut India offers A1: Start Deutsch 1, B1, B2 and C1 as digital exams on institute laptops at its premises.

**What is the pass mark for Goethe exams in India?**

The same as everywhere: 60 of 100 points in total at A1 and A2, and 60 of 100 points in each module from B1 to C2.

**Which German level do I need for Ausbildung in Germany?**

The visa for qualified vocational training asks for B1, unless the school has checked your German or you take a German course before the training (section 16a AufenthG).

**What is the minimum age for a Goethe exam in India?**

The Goethe rules set no minimum age. The Goethe-Institut India recommends its adult exams from the age of 16 and the C2 exam from the age of 18.

**How much is the Goethe exam fee in India?**

Each test centre sets its fee under its local fee rules. Check the current fee on the exam page of your Goethe-Institut or Goethe-Zentrum.
