## Goethe certificate validity: does it expire?

Goethe certificates from A1 to C2 do not expire. The Goethe-Institut says, however, that many institutions and employers expect a certificate that is not older than two years, so the office that receives it decides whether yours is recent enough.

A Goethe certificate has no expiry date. A certificate from ten years ago still proves that you passed the exam on that date. What it cannot prove is that your German is still at that level today, and this is why some offices ask for a recent certificate.

This page explains the difference between the validity of the certificate and the rules of the office that asks for it. It also covers lost certificates, name changes, PDF certificates and how anyone can check that a certificate is real.

### Why an office may still ask for a newer certificate

Validity is about the certificate. Acceptance is about the office. A visa section, a university, an employer or a recognition authority sets its own rules, and it can ask for a certificate from a recent date. The Goethe-Institut itself points out that many institutions and employers expect a certificate that is at most two years old.

Before you use an old certificate, ask the office that will receive it. Ask two questions: which level it needs, and whether it accepts a certificate of your date. If it wants a newer one, you take the exam again. There is no separate renewal.

### Visa, residence and citizenship

A spouse who joins a partner in Germany must be able to communicate in German at least in a simple way (section 30 AufenthG). German law sets simple German at level A1 (section 2 (9) AufenthG). The law lists exceptions, for example for spouses of EU Blue Card holders.

The settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) asks for adequate German, which is B1 (section 9 AufenthG).

For German citizenship you need German at level B1 (section 10 StAG).

The Goethe-Institut states that the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is accepted as proof of German for the settlement permit and for citizenship in Germany.

These laws name a level, not an age limit for the certificate. The office that handles your case decides whether it accepts your certificate.

### University admission

The Goethe-Zertifikat C2 gives access to study at every German speaking university. Many universities also accept Goethe C1 or B2. Each university decides, so check with your university.

A university can also have its own rule about the date of your certificate. Check the page of your study programme or ask its admissions office.

### Lost, wrong or changed certificates

- Lost certificate: the Goethe-Institut issues no duplicate. The test centre where you registered can issue a replacement document within ten years of the exam. It charges a fee.
- Wrong personal data: tell the test centre as soon as you get the certificate. With a valid ID you get a new certificate, and the wrong one becomes invalid. The test centre can charge a fee for the new one.
- Name change after the exam: the Goethe-Institut Pakistan says it issues neither a new certificate nor a replacement. You prove the change with an official document, such as a marriage certificate.
- PDF certificate: the test centre gives it to you as a PDF file. It can charge a fee for an extra paper version.

### How to check that a certificate is real

Anyone can check the validity of a Goethe certificate at goethe.de/verify. The Prüfungsordnung names this page for the check, and you can use it too before you send your certificate anywhere.

A certificate that the Goethe-Institut finds to be forged or wrong in content is invalid. A certificate from an exam taken during an exam ban is also invalid.

### If you need a new certificate

If an office wants a recent certificate, plan the retake like a first exam. From B1 upward you can take only the modules the office needs, as each module gets its own certificate. Ask the office first whether it accepts single module certificates.
