The Goethe-Zertifikat C2 gives access to every German speaking university, and many universities also accept Goethe C1 or B2, but each university decides. You pass Goethe C1 with 60 of 100 points in each module.

International students who apply for a course taught in German must show their German. The Goethe-Institut publishes a list of universities and the Goethe certificates each one accepts, dated May 2026. The list covers some courses or all courses, depending on the university.

Check your university on that list and in the admission rules of your course. Other proofs of German, such as TestDaF or the DSH, also exist, and your university names the ones it accepts.

On Faust, one scored online paper per part is free, and every PDF is free. Faust Academy is an independent practice platform.

### Goethe certificates for university study

What the Goethe-Institut states. Your university has the final word.

| Certificate | University access |
| --- | --- |
| Goethe-Zertifikat C2 | Access to study at every German speaking university |

| Goethe-Zertifikat B2 | Many universities accept it. Each university decides. |

### The Goethe C1 exam format

| Part | Length | Tasks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading (Lesen) | 65 minutes | 30 tasks in 4 parts |
| Listening (Hören) | 40 minutes | 30 tasks in 4 parts |
| Writing (Schreiben) | 75 minutes | 2 writing tasks |
| Speaking (Sprechen) | Oral exam | 2 parts, paired exam |

### Goethe C1 pass marks by module

Each module has its own result. A high score in one module does not make up for a low score in another.

| Module | Maximum points | Pass mark |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading (Lesen) | 100 | 60 points |
| Listening (Hören) | 100 | 60 points |
| Writing (Schreiben) | 100 | 60 points |
| Speaking (Sprechen) | 100 | 60 points |

### What the C1 exam asks

Reading has 30 tasks in 4 parts in 65 minutes, with gap fill and sentence insertion tasks. Listening has 30 tasks in 4 parts, and parts 1 and 3 play once.

Writing takes 75 minutes: a forum post with a target of 230 words for 60 points, and a formal message with a target of 120 words for 40 points.

Speaking is a paired exam. In exceptional cases you sit it alone. You get 20 minutes to prepare. In part 1 you give a talk and answer questions. In part 2 you discuss a disputed topic with your partner.

### Modules and retakes

Goethe B1, B2, C1 and C2 are modular. You can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen alone or together, and each passed module gets a certificate.

Module certificates from a later date can be combined with earlier ones. On request, and where the test centre can do it, an overall certificate shows the best results from one year.

You can retake a Goethe exam as often as you want. In the modular exams you can also retake single modules as often as you want.

### A plan for your university application

- Write down the exact certificate and level your course asks for.
- Take one C1 paper of each module to see where you stand.
- Practise reading and listening part by part, and write under the real time limit each week.
- Plan the exam date with your application deadline in mind. The test centre gives you the result, so ask it when results come out.
