You pass the Goethe B1 exam with 60 of 100 points in each module: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. The exam has four parts: reading (65 minutes), listening (40 minutes), writing (60 minutes) and speaking as a paired exam.

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 shows that you can use German on your own in everyday life and at work. German law uses level B1 for citizenship and for the settlement permit, and the Goethe-Institut states that its B1 certificate is accepted for both.

The B1 exam is modular. Reading (Lesen), listening (Hören), writing (Schreiben) and speaking (Sprechen) are four modules, and each module has its own result. This changes how you prepare, and how you retake a module that went wrong.

On Faust, one scored online paper per part is free, and every PDF is free. Faust Academy is an independent practice platform.

### Goethe B1 pass marks by module

Each module has its own result. A high score in one module does not make up for a low score in another.

| Module | Maximum points | Pass mark |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading (Lesen) | 100 | 60 points |
| Listening (Hören) | 100 | 60 points |
| Writing (Schreiben) | 100 | 60 points |
| Speaking (Sprechen) | 100 | 60 points |

### Goethe B1 exam in India: fee and dates

At the Goethe-Institut in India (Max Mueller Bhavan) the Goethe B1 exam costs INR 18,800 for all four modules, or INR 4,700 for one module. Every centre lists the same price (Goethe-Institut India exam pages, checked on 13 October 2026).

The next dates per city, the centres and how to book are on our page Goethe exam in India.

### How the B1 pass mark works

The pass mark is 60 of 100 points in every module. The Goethe-Institut uses the same rule for B1, B2, C1 and C2. There is no pass mark for the exam as a whole, because each module stands on its own.

An example: you score 72 in Lesen, 55 in Hören, 64 in Schreiben and 70 in Sprechen. You pass Lesen, Schreiben and Sprechen, and each of these modules gets a certificate. You do not pass Hören, so you retake only Hören.

Module certificates from a later date can be combined with earlier ones. On request, and where the test centre can do it, an overall certificate shows the best results from one year.

### The Goethe B1 exam format

| Part | Length | Tasks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading (Lesen) | 65 minutes | 30 tasks in 5 parts |
| Listening (Hören) | 40 minutes | 30 tasks in 4 parts |
| Writing (Schreiben) | 60 minutes | 3 writing tasks |
| Speaking (Sprechen) | Oral exam | 3 parts, paired exam |

### Goethe B1 reading (Lesen): 5 parts, 65 minutes

| Part | Task type | Tasks | Minutes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Part 1 | True or false | 6 | 10 |
| Part 2 | Multiple choice | 6 | 20 |
| Part 3 | Matching | 7 | 10 |
| Part 4 | Yes or no | 7 | 15 |
| Part 5 | Multiple choice | 4 | 10 |

### Reading at B1

You have 65 minutes for 30 tasks in 5 parts. The texts are the kind you meet in daily life: a blog post, a newspaper article, short ads, opinions on a topic and house rules or instructions.

The time for each part is a guide, not a hard limit. Use it to plan, so you do not spend half of the time on part 1.

### Goethe B1 listening (Hören): 4 parts, 40 minutes

| Part | Task type | Tasks | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Part 1 | True or false plus multiple choice | 10 | Played twice |
| Part 2 | Multiple choice | 5 | Played once |
| Part 3 | True or false | 7 | Played once |
| Part 4 | Matching | 8 | Played twice |

### Listening at B1

Listening has 30 tasks in 4 parts. Parts 1 and 4 play twice. Parts 2 and 3 play once, so you must answer while you listen. Read the tasks before each audio starts.

### Goethe B1 writing (Schreiben): 3 tasks, 60 minutes

| Part | Task | Minutes | Points |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Part 1 | Write an email, target 80 words | 20 | 40 |
| Part 2 | Write a forum post, target 80 words | 25 | 40 |
| Part 3 | Write an email, target 40 words | 15 | 20 |

### Writing at B1

Writing takes 60 minutes for 3 tasks. Parts 1 and 2 give 40 points each, and part 3 gives 20 points. Part 1 is an informal email to a friend, part 2 is your opinion in an online forum, and part 3 is a short formal email, for example to a teacher or a boss.

Cover every point the task asks for. A missing point costs more than a small grammar mistake.

### The B1 speaking exam (Sprechen)

Speaking is a paired exam. In exceptional cases you sit it alone. You get 15 minutes to prepare. The exam has three parts.

In part 1 you plan something together with your partner. In part 2 you present a topic. In part 3 your partner and an examiner give feedback on your presentation and ask you questions, and you answer them.

### Exam day: order, breaks and modules

If the three written modules are on one date, the rules recommend the order Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and the test centre can change it. There is a break of at least 15 minutes between them.

Goethe B1, B2, C1 and C2 are modular. You can take Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen alone or together, and each passed module gets a certificate. The Goethe-Institut exam rules name three formats: on paper at a test centre, digital on a laptop at a test centre, and, under certain conditions, online on your own computer. The structure, content and grading are the same in all three formats. Ask your test centre which formats it offers.

### Who needs Goethe B1

These rules come from German law and from the Goethe-Institut. The office that handles your case decides which certificate it accepts.

- For German citizenship you need German at level B1 (section 10 StAG).
- The Goethe-Institut states that the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is accepted as proof of German for the settlement permit and for citizenship in Germany.
- The settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) asks for adequate German, which is B1 (section 9 AufenthG).
- A skilled worker can get the settlement permit after three years with a work permit and adequate German (B1), among other rules (section 18c (1) AufenthG).
- For a qualified vocational training (Ausbildung) visa, you show adequate German (B1) unless the school has checked your German or you will take a German course before the training (section 16a AufenthG).

### Results, certificate and validity

The test centre where you took the exam gives you the results. It cannot release a result early for one person.

The Goethe-Institut issues the certificate on paper or as a PDF. The test centre decides the form. Anyone can check a certificate at goethe.de/verify.

The Goethe-Institut exam rules set no expiry date for the B1 certificate. The office that asks for it decides which certificates it accepts.

If you lose the certificate, the test centre where you registered can issue a replacement within 10 years, for a fee.

### A 4 week plan with B1 practice papers

- Week 1: take one paper of each module under the real time limit. Note your points per module.
- Week 2: work on the module with the lowest score. Take a new paper in that module every second day.
- Week 3: do one timed writing paper and one speaking paper. Check that you cover every task point.
- Week 4: take one full set of all four modules again. Book the real exam when every module is at 60 points or more.

### Questions

**What are the Goethe B1 passing marks?**

You need 60 of 100 points in each of the four modules: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. Each module counts on its own, so a strong result in one module does not make up for a weak result in another.

**Can I pass Goethe B1 with a low listening score if my other scores are high?**

No. Listening is a module of its own and needs 60 points. You still pass the other modules and get a certificate for each of them, and you retake only listening.

**Can I retake one module of Goethe B1?**

Yes. You can retake the whole exam or a single module as often as you want. A module you passed keeps its certificate. The test centre can set a waiting time before a retake date and tells you with your result.

**How long is the Goethe B1 exam?**

Reading takes 65 minutes, listening 40 minutes and writing 60 minutes. If the written modules are on one date, there is a break of at least 15 minutes between them. Speaking is a separate paired exam, and you get 15 minutes to prepare.

**How long is the Goethe B1 certificate valid?**

The Goethe-Institut exam rules set no expiry date for the B1 certificate. The office that asks for your certificate, such as an embassy, a university or an employer, decides which certificates it accepts, so ask that office. Anyone can check that a certificate is real at goethe.de/verify.

**Where do I get my Goethe exam result?**

The test centre where you took the exam gives you the result. The Goethe-Institut does not release a result early for one person. The exam rules give no fixed number of days, so ask your test centre when it sends results.

**Is there an age limit for the Goethe B1 exam?**

There is no minimum age. The Goethe-Institut recommends the adult B1 exam from 16 years. There is also a B1 version for young learners from 12 years. You do not need an A2 certificate to register.

**What does the Goethe B1 exam cost?**

Each test centre sets its own fee from its local fee schedule, and shows it on the registration form or the exam page of the centre. Find your centre on goethe.de.
