The full reading paper is free to start online, without an account, and every PDF is free. DTZ Lesen has five Teile with 25 questions, numbered 21 to 45, and you have 45 minutes. Every text comes from daily life in Germany: a directory, ads, short news and formal messages, a brochure and a letter. Teil 2 has a built in trap: one of its situations has no matching ad. The task below comes from Faust DTZ Lesen Übungssatz 01 and shows how to find it. ### Teil 2: five situations, eight ads, one X The instruction says: „Lesen Sie die Situationen 26 bis 30 und die Anzeigen a bis h. Wählen Sie für jede Situation die passende Anzeige. Jede Anzeige darf nur einmal verwendet werden. Für eine Situation gibt es keine passende Anzeige. Markieren Sie dafür X auf dem Antwortbogen.“ So you have five situations and eight ads. Three ads are not used, each ad fits only once, and exactly one situation gets X (keine passende Anzeige, no matching ad). ### Situation 28 „28. Sie möchten lernen, bei Meinungsverschiedenheiten ruhig zu sprechen. Sie können nur sonntags an einem Kurs teilnehmen.“ - Condition 1, the topic: you want to learn to stay calm when you disagree with someone. - Condition 2, the day: you can only go to a course on a Sunday (nur sonntags). ### The two ads that look right Ad c, „Auch im Streit im Gespräch bleiben“: „Wie sage ich, was mich stört, ohne laut zu werden? Im Kurs üben wir Zuhören und ruhige Antworten anhand von Alltagssituationen. Wählen Sie zwischen vier Dienstagabenden von 18 bis 20 Uhr und einem Samstag von 10 bis 17 Uhr.“ The topic of ad c is a perfect match: Streit, ohne laut zu werden, ruhige Antworten. That is the trap. Now check the day: the course runs on Tuesday evenings or on one Saturday. There is no Sunday, so ad c fails condition 2. Ad d, „Wieder miteinander reden“: „Wenn Lärm oder andere Probleme das Zusammenleben im Haus belasten, setzen wir uns mit den beteiligten Nachbarn an einen Tisch.“ This is not a course. It is a meeting with your neighbours and a neutral person who leads the talk, with appointments in the evening („Termine ab 18.30 Uhr“). It is the answer to situation 26, where you have a dispute with your neighbours. No other ad offers a course on Sunday. The answer to 28 is X. ### How to work through Teil 2 - Underline every condition in the situation: what you need, who it is for, which day or time, and how (in person, by video, free of charge). - An ad with the right topic is not enough. It must meet every condition. - Do the clear situations first. Each ad fits only once, so every answer you are sure of removes an ad. - Mark X for the one situation where every ad fails at least one condition. ### Teil 5, gap 40: one grammar point Teil 5 is a letter to the lost property office of the railway with six gaps. Gap 40: „Gestern habe ich auf der Fahrt nach Bremen _____ (40) _____ Rucksack im Zug vergessen.“ The options are a) meinem, b) meinen, c) meiner. The answer is b, meinen. Ask what the writer forgot: der Rucksack. It is the object of vergessen, so it is in the accusative, and a masculine noun in the accusative takes meinen. In Teil 5, read the whole sentence and find the noun and the verb before you choose an ending. ### DTZ Lesen: the five Teile This is the format of g.a.s.t. Übungssatz 1, and the Faust papers follow it. You can mark answers on the question sheet first, but only the answer sheet (Antwortbogen) is marked, and copying your answers onto it counts as exam time. Mark each answer on the sheet as you go, so you do not run out of time at the end. ### How your reading score counts Your 25 reading points are added to your 20 listening points. With 33 to 45 points, Hören and Lesen together are at B1. With 20 to 32 points, they are at A2. Only the sum counts, so a strong reading score helps a weaker listening score. For a B1 overall result you need B1 in Sprechen and in at least one written part: Hören and Lesen, or Schreiben. ### How Faust marks this paper Faust scores your reading paper automatically when you hand it in. In Teil 2 exactly one of the five situations has no matching ad, and you mark X for it on the answer sheet. **How long is DTZ Lesen?** 45 minutes for 25 questions. Lesen and Schreiben together take 75 minutes, and copying your answers onto the answer sheet is part of that time. **Can I use a dictionary in the DTZ?** No. Dictionaries and other aids are not allowed, and mobile phones must stay out of the exam room. **Is there a free DTZ reading test online?** Yes.
