On this page you hear a real DTZ Hören recording from a Faust practice paper and see its question, the answer and why the other options are wrong, in English. The full listening paper with all four recordings is free to start online, without an account, and every PDF is free.

DTZ Hören has four Teile with 20 questions in 25 minutes, and you hear every text only once. You hear short messages, radio announcements, everyday conversations and people giving their opinion on one topic.

The players below are the four recordings of Faust DTZ Hören Übungssatz 01. Play the first one, try question 1 yourself, then read how it is solved.

### Teil 1, question 1: the plan changes

Teil 1 starts with this instruction: „Sie hören vier Ansagen. Zu jeder Ansage gibt es eine Aufgabe. Welche Lösung (a, b oder c) passt am besten?“ You hear four short recorded messages, and each one has one question. Question 1 is the first message after the example in the Teil 1 recording.

Kathrin is moving house tomorrow and leaves Ben a message. Before she speaks, you have time to read the question. Find the word that decides it: zuerst (first). You are listening for the thing that goes into the van first.

### The question

1. Was soll beim Umzug zuerst eingeladen werden?

- a) Die Bücherkartons.
- b) Der Küchentisch.
- c) Die Waschmaschine.

### What Kathrin says, and the answer

„Wir hatten ja gesagt, dass die Bücherkisten zuerst in den Wagen kommen. Ladet bitte doch zuerst die Waschmaschine ein. Die muss ganz nach hinten, damit wir sie gut befestigen können.“

The answer is c, die Waschmaschine. Kathrin first repeats the old plan: „Wir hatten ja gesagt“ means "we had said", so it points back to something that is no longer true. Then the small word doch marks the change, and the new plan is the washing machine first. The book boxes come after it: „Danach kommen die Kisten davor.“

Why a is wrong: the book boxes are the first thing you hear, and they were the plan. A candidate who marks the first noun that fits the question loses this point. Notice also that the option says Bücherkartons and Kathrin says Bücherkisten. The DTZ often uses a different word for the same thing, so listen for the meaning, not for the same word.

Why b is wrong: Kathrin never mentions a kitchen table. An option like this catches people who guess from the topic (moving house, so furniture) instead of from the recording.

### Teil 3, questions 12 and 13: two questions on one conversation

In Teil 3 each conversation has two questions: first richtig or falsch, then a, b or c. In conversation 2 a colleague asks Milan about the canteen. Question 12 says: „Milan ist mit dem Essen in der Kantine insgesamt zufrieden.“ Milan complains about one dish („Der war ziemlich trocken.“) but then says „Aber sonst schmeckt es mir dort wirklich gut“ and „ich werde weiter dort essen“. The word insgesamt (overall) decides it: richtig.

Question 13 asks: „Warum geht Milan jetzt später in die Kantine?“ The options are a) Seine Mittagspause beginnt später. b) Dann muss er weniger lange warten. c) Dann gibt es günstigere Gerichte. Milan says: „Ich gehe inzwischen erst um halb zwei. Dann stehen viel weniger Leute an der Ausgabe, und ich bekomme mein Essen schneller.“ The answer is b. Option a is the trap: his colleague asks „Hast du jetzt andere Pausenzeiten?“, and Milan does take his break later. But the question asks warum, and the reason he gives is the shorter queue, not a new work schedule.

### What these questions teach for every Teil

- Use the reading time to find the one word in the question that decides it, for example zuerst, insgesamt or warum.
- Wait for a change of plan. Words like doch, aber and stattdessen often come right before the answer.
- Two options can both be in the recording. Only one answers the exact question.
- Mark your answer as soon as you hear it and look at the next question. The recording keeps playing and you hear it once.

### DTZ Hören: the four Teile

This is the format of g.a.s.t. Übungssatz 1, and the Faust papers follow it. Every question is worth one point.

| Teil | What you hear | Questions | How you answer |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Teil 1 | Four short messages, on the phone or in public places | 1 to 4 | a, b or c |
| Teil 2 | Five short announcements from the radio | 5 to 9 | a, b or c |
| Teil 3 | Four everyday conversations, two questions each | 10 to 17 | richtig or falsch, then a, b or c |
| Teil 4 | Three statements with different opinions on one topic | 18 to 20 | Match each statement to one of the sentences a to f |

### Timing in the exam

The recording runs with all its pauses, and you cannot stop it. Before Teil 4 you get one minute to read the sentences a to f. In this Faust paper you also get 15 seconds before each text in Teile 1 to 3 to read its questions.

You may write your answers on the question sheet while you listen, but only the answer sheet (Antwortbogen) is marked. The written exam has no breaks.

### How listening counts for your result

Hören and Lesen count together: 20 listening questions and 25 reading questions, one point each, 45 points in total. From 33 points this part is at B1, from 20 points at A2. The DTZ gives one overall result, A2 or B1, and Sprechen must always reach the level on the certificate.

### How Faust marks this paper

Faust scores your listening paper automatically when you hand it in. Faust is an independent practice platform. After Übungssatz 01, do Übungssatz 02 and 03, linked below, so you hear new voices and new topics.

### Questions

**How often do I hear each text in DTZ Hören?**

Once. Every text in the DTZ listening part plays one time, with the pauses already in the recording. That is why the reading time before each text matters: read the question first, then listen for the answer.

**How many points do I need in Hören and Lesen for B1?**

Hören and Lesen are marked together out of 45 points. 33 to 45 points is B1, 20 to 32 points is A2. Your overall DTZ result also depends on Schreiben and Sprechen.

**Can I use a pencil or a dictionary?**

No. You mark the answer sheet only with a black or blue pen that cannot be erased, no pencil. Dictionaries and mobile phones are not allowed in the exam room.

**Can I practise DTZ listening for free?**

Yes. One scored online paper is free for Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, and every PDF is free. The listening paper on this page starts without an account, with all four recordings. g.a.s.t. also publishes practice sets (Übungssätze) with audio.
